Kenya
Amboselli
On the Ambosellin National Park you can find 6 different types of vulture, various kingfishers and the Taveta Golden Weaver birds. In the swamped areas you can find no less than 12 different types of heron. Birds of prey are also very well represented: 12 different species of Eagle, Buzzards, Goshawks, Harriers and Kites are found in the Amboselli National Park area.
Lake Nakuru, Lake Elmenteita and Lake Bogoria
The soda lakes, Lake Nakuru, Lake Elmenteita and Lake Bogoria are the stage of a true flamingo spectacle. Both the small and the large flamingo are present here in huge numbers. Near Lake Nakuru pelicans can also be seen. In the surrounding area near the lakes more than 400 other bird species can be seen.
Lake Naivasha and Lake Baringo
The Lakes Nivasha and Baringo are home to hundreds of different bird species: amongst others the Big Kingfisher, the African Sea-Eagle, Osprey and several kinds of heron can be seen by the shores of Lakes Nivasha and Baringo. Crescent Island is located in Lake Naivasha and can be reached by boat.
Masai Mara
The Masai Mara Nature Reserve counts over 450 registered species of bird; amongst others the rare Verraux’ Eagle Owl and the Purple-Crested Turaco. Kori Bustards and raptors like the Martial Eagle are prevalent in the Masai Mara.
Tsavo National Park
The Tsavo National Park is blessed with over 500 species of birds. Ngulia hosts an annual recurring phenomenon known as The Ngulia phenomenon. As the result of the position of the moon, the powerful lodge lights and fog, thousands of migratory birds from the northern hemisphere ‘fall’ out of the dark sky at night. In November and December nets are placed near the Ngulia Safari Lodge. The birds caught are ringed and registered. In this way, scientists can get a more detailed view on the migratory patterns of the various species. In the past few years, over 60,000 birds have been caught and ringed.
Samburu, Buffalo Springs and Shaba
Samburu, Buffalo Springs and Shaba Reserves are habitat to the Somali Ostrich with its characteristic blue legs and neck, contrary to the usual pink of the Ostrich. These colours become more vivid during the breeding season, especially in the male population. Other birds that can be seen frequently here are the Martial Eagle, Geek and the African Pygmy Falcon. Many Kingfishers are to be seen along the riverbanks.
Mount Kenya and surroundings
Mount Kenya is habitat to a large variety of birds. Specific ones include the Crested Eagle, Mountain Buzzard and the Mackinder Owl.
Meru
For bird fanatics, the Meru National Park has something special to offer: the rare Palm-Nut Vulture, the Palm Swallow, Pel’s Fish Owl and the Peter’s Finfoot.
Kenyan coast
Midah Creek is located south of Malindi along the Kenyan coast and has a number of estuaries surrounded by mangrove woods. It is one of the stopping places for migratory birds from the northern hemisphere. It also has more to offer like the African Sea-Eagle, Ospreys, different kinds of Sterns and the rare Crab Plover.
The Arabuko Sokoke Forest Reserve is home to a large number of native birds which are unique to the reserve; the Amani Sunbird, Sokoke Scops Owl, Fischer’s Touracos, and Clarke’s Weaver Bird are just some examples.
